This proved to be another successful day for the Spartans as we travelled north for the BWL National Championships in Coventry. Zoe was the first one out for the club competing in the lightweight women’s competition and a very late entry to this event her training has been firmly set towards Rio and so she had to settle for the 96kg, this was her second lift. In the end the third lift of 97kg which Zoe didn’t manage wasn’t necessary for her to secure the British title.

In the final group we had Chris competing in the heavyweight men. Following a few weeks of basketball play offs and strongman competitions the opener was a comfortable 120kg and he then secured 126kg with ease. He attempted 132kg on his final lift but this was taken a little early as it had slowed but this secured  him fourth place in a tough group. Unfortunately Rob fell ill the day before the competition so didn’t travel.

The final lifter from the club was Nathaniel who opened with 153kg and got three white lights through each lift so went on to 156kg and finished with 158kg. This marked a 10kg increase on the final lift Nathaniel had out in Hungary at the Europeans just 6 months ago which is a fantastic improvement and secured him a second place in the light weight men’s class of this competition.

27.5kg increase on previous best for Ben

Ben qualified for the All England Championships with an impressive performance at Moulton College today. He finished with a 190kg squat which was a 10kg increases on his personal best, he followed this up with a 2.5kg increase on his bench press and then an increase of 15kg on his previous deadlift performance to finish on a 530kg total.

This performance mean that Ben secured 1st place in the juniors with ease and was placed 5th in the open category less than one point behind the 4th place competitor. This has been the culmination of a successful training program and we hope will continue towards the All England in August.
