Nathaniel Wilding

Nathaniel first came into Powerlifting through the British Squad's disabled coach, Jon Amos.  Jon directed him to Neil Thomas as he was aware that the club was beginning to get up and running.

Nathaniel enjoys the sport as it gives him something to compete in and this always helps to motivate him to work harder.  The club is also a great way of being part of a group with similar interests and everyone enjoys having a laugh in between training.

Nathaniel has spina bifida but said he doesn't find that this hinders his training or competing.

'As you can see the main problem I have is being ginger, my face goes red when I'm training and it simply clashes with my hair'  Nathaniel is clearly the most flexible member of the team.

Nathaniel regularly trains at his home in Felixstowe as well as participating in other sports such as canoeing.

Competitive Action

The first competition in June of 2007 saw Nathaniel take 1st place in the British Finals in the under 52kg class and he also walked away with the most promising junior athlete title as well with a lift of 70kg.  By January of 2008 this had seen a dramatic improvement and in Cardiff he secured 1st place with a final lift of 85kg, following this up in Junior with a British title and a lift of 92.5kg.

This improvement and success was rewarded and Nathaniel was asked to represent his country not once but twice in July of 2008, in both the French Open and the IWAS Junior Games in America, Nathaniel was able to maintain his best total of 92.5kg securing a 1st place in France and a 2nd place in America while being one of the youngest juniors attending.

An early trip to Cardiff in January 2009 saw Nathaniel take 1st place with all 3 lifts being good and finishing on 95kg and he improved this to 100kg at the British finals in June 2009.  Nathaniel returned to Cardiff in January and in the intervening period had decided to go up a weight class, now choosing to lift in the under 60kg class as the struggle to maintain weight was becoming too much.  He finished this competition with a 105kg lift and the best junior male trophy.  After a spell at the high performance centre in Leeds Nathaniel came back to the Spartans in September 2010 and continued to train hard being rewarded in the Cardiff competition in January of 2011 with a finishing total of 117.5kg.  While this was good enough for the junior title now being in the under 67.5kg class and up against a paralympian Nathaniel respectfully settled for 2nd place in the senior section of the competition.  This was however good enough to get Nathaniel selected for the BWAD squad heading for Duabi In April 2011 for the IWAS World Junior Championships.  At this competition Nathaniel was up against stiff competition from Iran and Jordan who had not only had a couple of additional years on Nathaniel but a few kg in bodyweight as well.  Nathaniel secured 4th place with a lift of 120kg.

In the British Finals, June 2011, Nathaniel was able to secure 2nd place but was only able to have his first lift successful and so finished on 115kg.
